The state cabinet, on Wednesday, approved the proposal for creating a joint venture company for implementing Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) project, aimed to provide internet services to the public free of cost or at low rates and to ensure speedy connectivity in schools and government institutions.
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL) will have equal shares in the joint venture company, said CM.
Around 20 lakh economically backward households will get internet connection free of cost through this project, which is estimated at Rs 1,028 crore. The project funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) also aims at providing internet connectivity to more than 30,000 government and educational institutions.
Vizhinjam Port: Hike in compensation
The cabinet approved the proposal to hike compensation for fish workers who will be losing jobs in the wake of establishment of the Vizhinjam Port. The government will now be disbursing a total of Rs 8.2 crore as compensation.
Among other decisions taken during Wednesday's cabinet meeting were a rectification of anomalies in the wage revision of employees in state SC/ST development corporation and allocation of aided status to Sathya Sai Arts and Science College in Thiruvananthapuram district functioning under Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust and to Sri Sankara College, Kilimanoor under Sri Sankara Trust.
Besides, the government decided to stand guarantee for Kerala Women Development Corporation to avail loans from central agencies up to Rs 150 crore. Decision was also taken to create 21 posts in the legal metrology department, one post each of professor, associate professor and assistant professor in the reproductive medicine wing at Thiruvananthapuram SAT Hospital, 84 posts in excise department for establishing six new circle offices and 10 posts of woman civil excise officers for Janamaithri excise squads in Palakkad and Wayanad districts.
The cabinet also decided to appoint Dr C Ushakumari, the most senior among government ayurveda college principals, as the ayurveda medical education director.
