Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project, financed by the World Bank

Sonowal hoped that the project would be able to uplift the agricultural sector of the state and inspire the farmers to adopt latest technology to increase production

The Centre and World Bank on October 30 had signed a Rs 1,700 crore loan agreement for the project that aims at supporting the Assam government to facilitate agri-business investments, increase agriculture productivity and market access, and enable small farm holders produce crops that are resilient to recurrent floods or droughts in the state. It will be implemented in over 16 districts of the state. It is hoped that over five lakh farming households will directly benefit from the project

Another key component of the project is to promote market-led production that can deal with the vagaries of climate change as Assam's agriculture sector is highly vulnerable to climate variability and the state experiences recurrent floods and droughts. Currently, more than 50 per cent of the paddy growing areas are prone to flooding, submergence and drought

The government has chosen ARIAS Society as the nodal agency to manage to the project considering its earlier experiences of working in such projects

Saying that the young generation must be motivated to take up farming as a viable profession by showing the great potential of agriculture, Sonowal urged the colleges of the state to sensitise the students about agriculture and its allied professions. "Earlier, there was no data to back up the success stories of the agriculture department and therefore it is important to keep records about the changes as a result of this project, which would be implemented over a period of seven years," he said

Six international knowledge partners have come on board to share technical know-how in managing the different components of the project like agriculture, horticulture and livestock

Agriculture minister Atul Bora said the project would help in bringing latest technological advancements to the farmers of the state and would help in managing the vagaries of weather
