Value: 100 Crore | The second bridge over the Khandepar river is expected to be ready for use within six months’ time, and a deadline for the same has been set for the contractor carrying out the work by the public works department (PWD). The110 metre- long RCC four-lane bridge will connect Usgao to Khandepar and is one of the many big ticket projects costing over Rs 100 crore taken up by the central government in Goa under its ongoing highways expansion agenda
The Khandepar bridge is part of the National Highway 4-A. The project includes widening of the approach roads. On the Ponda side, the widening will stretch up to Safa Masjid and between Chowgule mining company and the bridge on Par side. The total project length is 7km and the cost is around Rs240 crore
The Khandepar bridge is one of the projects on which work is going on at a breakneck speed currently so it can open by March 2019, in less than four years since foundation stone for the project was laid by union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari in April 2015
A total of 70kms of the NH4-A from Panaji leading upto Molem is being four-laned under national highways expansion. As the NH4-A was in bad condition, commuters are using an alternative route to travel to Belgaum, which increases travel distance by around 60kms
The new Khandepar bridge is being built about 100m away from the existing bridge, on the Opa side. The new bridge was also necessitated because the existing one is very narrow. Barely five metres wide, two vehicles cannot pass at once over the bridge, causing traffic congestion on the route
The new Khandepar bridge will have two spans of 28m each, two spans of 25m each and five underpasses
