The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is likely to start work by October end on a proposed underground U-turn near Ambinece mall for the city-bound traffic and an elevated U-turn near Shankar Chowk for Delhi-bound vehicles
Though Hindustan Insecticides Limited (HIL) is yet to hand over 1.2 acres, apparently the last hurdle holding up the project, the NHAI, sources said, had decided to go ahead with construction without any further delay
NHAI project director Ashok Sharma said, “The work will be awarded soon, and construction will start by the end of this month.” He further said that they were hopeful to get the possession of the 1.2 acres soon as talks were going on. “Work on both the underpass U-turn and the elevated U-turn will start simultaneously,” he added
As per the plan, the U-turn underpass will be 377-metre-long with four lanes, while the elevated U-turn will be 455-metre-long having three lanes. Besides, a 559-metre-long and 7-metre-wide service lane will be built along the underpass and a 490-metre-long and 7.5-metre-wide service lane will come up along the elevated U-turn. NHAI has also decided to construct a bus bay shelter on both sides of the two U-turns
The underpass is to be developed in public-private partnership (PPP) with NHAI funding 50% of the project cost while Ambience Private Limited and DLF paying the remaining 50%. For the elevated U-turn, NHAI will contribute 75% of the cost and GMDA will take care of the remaining 25%. “The underpass near the Ambience mall is going to reduce congestion on NH-8 significantly, especially during rush hours,” said Col Prakash Tiwari, executive director, CSR, DLF Ltd
An official from Ambience mall said, “This U-turn underpass will help stop wrong-side driving from Indus metro station
