People who commute between Chennai and Puducherry — as daily commuters or to party in the former French territory — have reason to raise a toast
The Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) project to widen and four-lane East Coast Road from Kudimiyandithopu near Chennai to Koonimedu on the outskirts of Pondicherry has received the go-ahead from the National Green Tribunal
The southern bench of the tribunal consisting of judicial member Justice M S Nambiar and expert member Prof P S Rao disposed of a petition opposing the project, noting that environment clearance (EC) was not required for the project nor was TNRDC subject to approvals under the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) rules
The bench made the observation after Abdul Saleem, counsel for TNRDC, said the project did not attract the environment impact notification or the CRZ notification because the corporation was not contravening environmental norms
The bench, however, allowed the project subject to the various conditions: TNRDC had to plant within two months broad-leaved indigenous trees species, with large crowns, suitable to the locality, and the status report regarding 51 trees already planted had to be filed
