The MCB has started the process of desilting of the DAV pond to increase its capacity ahead of the monsoon
In the first stage, workers are clearing heaps of garbage dumped on the pond land, from last three days
After every spell of rain, the city faces the waterlogging problem and MCB officials have to face the resentment of residents
In the general house meeting held in December last year, it was decided to start the desilting of the DAV pond
Even in the meeting held last week on the waterlogging and rainwater disposal, in was decided to do the desilting of the ponds in the city
As much as Rs 50 lakh was taken from the Rs 5 crore funds kept for the beautification project of ponds
In the recent years, the land of the ponds has been encroached by the land mafia, due to which its capacity has reduced
Earlier the rainwater was made to flow into the ponds and later released in the sullage carrier, but with its capacity shrinking, the rainwater was also channelized into the sullage carrier, which led to breaches at many times in the last two years
Experts have suggested that to dispose of rainwater, the only way is to increase the capacity of the ponds
Last year, the MCB had to face embarrassment and residents had to face problems as city roads remained submerged in rainwater for three-four days
Chief sanitary inspector Sandeep Kataria said cleaning of the DAV pond was going on from the last three days and desilting would be started soon
Last evening, Finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal had also held a meeting with MCB officials and instructing them to take precautionary measures ahead of the rainy season
