Track doubling work between Egmore and Dindigul would be completed within a year, said Southern Railway General Manager Vashishta Johri
he said that a small portion of work was pending in a few places owing to problems in land acquisition. It would be sorted out with the help of the State government soon. The work was progressing swiftly, he added
To a question on cancellation of Ernakulam-Rameswaram Express train, he said seat occupancy was very low. There was no point in operating trains without revenue. “If the demand was high, we will resume the train service in this section,” he said
On gauge conversion work in Punalur section, the GM said that track laying work was almost over. “We have planned to complete it by September end
Reacting to formation of a new railway line beween Sabarimala and Dindigul, he said the State government should share 50% of this new project’s cost. “But Kerala said it had no money to contribute. Tamil Nadu too did not contribute so far. We should find ways to get funds for new projects,” he added
Gauge conversion work on Bodi-Madurai section along a stretch of 38 km would be completed by March 2018. “Funds were not a problem for this project. We could divert funds for speedy implementation of the project,” Mr. Vashishta Johri said
On developmental activities and passenger facilities in Dindigul Station, he said electrification work was in progress on Platform one. It would be over in two months. After completion of the work, Platform one would be opened for public use as all other works on Platform one was over
While inspecting Dindigul station, he questioned the officials about facilities being provided to passengers at the station
At the ticket counter, he asked the commercial manager whether they have separate ticket counter for bulk booking. “If not, you make arrangements for bulk booking with existing facilities. Moreover, passengers should be motivated to use swipe cards to buy tickets through ticket vending machines installed at the station,” Mr. Johri said
Later, he also inspected platforms, running staff room and passenger waiting rooms at Dindigul Railway Station
Madurai Divisional Railway Manager Neenu Ittyerah and Station Manager G.R. Radhakrishnan accompanied him
