The Jamia Auqaf Committee, headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has decided to install a fire alarm system at the historic Jamia Masjid

The panel will consult experts and later invite tenders for installing the system as well as CCTV cameras at the heritage structure

The divisional administration yesterday reviewed the status of development works carried out under the Jamia Masjid beautification plan. The project was conceived at a cost of Rs 4.92 crore, of which Rs 3.93 crore had been spent

The Jamia Auqaf Committee, at its meeting held here today, analysed suggestions aimed at preserving the heritage structure and ensuring its safety in any eventuality such as natural disasters and fire

Mirwaiz said, β€œIt has been decided to deploy a firefighting vehicle on the premises of the mosque, besides installing CCTV cameras and a fire alarm system. Tenders will be invited after consultations with experts

It was also decided to prevent the Jamia Mosque from lightning. The authorities concerned will be consulted in this regard

Earlier, Mirwaiz sought the intervention of the MC in repairing a drain on the periphery of the mosque. He said it was one of the main sources of seepage at the mosque and was damaging its wooden pillars

The Divisional Commissioner has directed officials of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to set up a team to inspect the drain
