The novel project “Mission 100 Eri” (100 Eri Iyakkam) of desilting and renovating 100 water bodies in the district has evoked good response. The project was launched in the district in the month of April and about 96 % of the works had already been completed, Rohini R. Bhajibhakare, District Collector, has said
She was speaking at a brief function to launch the work of desilting and renovating the Muniappan Temple lake at Pottaneri village in Mecheri block
Farmers
She said that the State government has accorded priority for the proper maintenance of the water bodies for increasing their water holding capacity. The kudimaramathu scheme and the programme of allowing the farmers to lift the silt from the lakes and tanks free of cost were aimed towards this direction
Ms. Rohini said that in the first phase under the “Mission 100 Eri” project, important lakes which were in poor shape were identified. They were desilted and renovated with the help of the local community, voluntary organisations and students
All the works under this programme will be completed soon
The desilted lakes were expected to have adequate storage of water during the forthcoming monsoon period, which in turn will increase the groundwater table to a big extent
