As part of its efforts to renovate water bodies in the district, Olirum Erodu Foundation (OEF) has began to desilt the Kolathupalayam Lake that spread across 22 acre at Ganapathipalayam village in Modakurichi taluk here
The foundation has so far desilted and deepened 30 water bodies in the district covering 120 acres. It includes, check dams, canals, tanks, ponds and other water storage points. Work began to desilt the lake at a cost of ? 20 lakh
S. Ganesan, Secretary of the foundation, local farmers and villagers participated in the inaugural ceremony. Farmers said that deepening of the lake will help in storing more water which in turn will help in recharging the ground water in the area. Recharging the wells and borewells will help the farmers and the villagers to solve the agriculture and drinking water needs, they added
Likewise, the foundation along with Erode Spice Round Table-211 has initiated a new project wherein, palm seeds and neem seeds will be planted near the bunds of the water bodies that were desilted by the foundation. The first plantation was done at Moolakarai check dam at Kathirampatti Panchayat. So far, a total of 5,000 palm seeds and 3,000 neem seeds were planted at three water bodies in the district
