The state government’s urgency in clearing the Hyperloop project as a ‘public infrastructure project’ to receive speedy clearances has raised the eyebrows of transport experts
They felt that the government should have carried out proper ground checks before giving the project a go ahead
While Maharashtra is the only state to have given it the “infrastructure status”, question remains as to which ministry would clear the project and what safety rules should be followed
When there are proven ways to increase mobility through much more affordable means, why the state government has taken a leap into the unknown, asked urban transport expert Sujit Patwardhan
He said that before one gets carried away with the hype surrounding the project, one should ponder the cost factor, cost per passenger per km and acclimatisation with the unproven technology
Transport activist Prashant Inamdar said that hyperloop is a totally new technology which is yet to be proven worldwide
Several aspects about the project such as technical feasibility, safety parameters and norms, technical authority to conduct performance testing, competent statutory authority to grant safety approvals etc are still not clear,” he added
Inamdar said that no surveys and studies have been conducted so far to determine the need for such a mode of transportation In the absence of transparency in decision-making, there will always be apprehension that the decision has not been based on sound principles, he added
