Channelization of the Beas, which wreaks havoc every monsoon, will start very soon as government has sanctioned Rs 585 crore in the first phase. The Beas banks in the entire district would be protected by building concrete walls, forest minister Govind Singh Thakur said here
Nearly 70km stretch of the river will be channelized from Palchan village near Manali till Aut in Mandi district. When flooded, the Beas changes its course every year and has washed away hundreds of bigha of agriculture and forest land. The concrete walls would be built to control the river and protect its banks. The project, which was estimated at Rs 1,300 crore, also includes beautification of the river for tourism purpose
The Centre has sanctioned Rs 585 crore in the first stage. The work will start very soon,” Thakur said. He added that, “A committee would be formed for executing the work. We shall not compromise with quality. We are planning to develop some viewpoints near the river where tourists can enjoy the Beas charm without putting their lives in danger

The project got in principal approval from the Himachal government following public demand. The project plan, which was initially drafted by the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, consists of protecting both the banks of the river and controlling its water flow
