Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is busy laying and relaying pipelines across the city to address water shortage. Though dust and traffic congestion have made life difficult, public ignore the inconveniences caused to them and expect that it would help address the issue of water crisis. Kochi corporation councillor Rajeev K Chandrasekharan, who represents Ponnurunni, said that KWA has undertaken pipe-laying works to ensure water supply at Kadavanthra and nearby regions. The works are being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) project. It aims to provide water supply from the now defunct Kuthapady pump house near Thammanam

KWA is supposed to complete the project in 11 months. They have only three months left to complete the work. The project is expected to provide solution to drinking water shortage at Kadavanthra, Kadavanthra South, Janatha and Elamkulam,” he said

KWA officials check pressure in pipelines to ensure that there is no leakage, and it is a time-consuming process. Public works department, Kochi corporation and other road owners want KWA to complete relaying of road before the onset of monsoon,” said Chandrasekharan

Pipe-laying works worth Rs 1.5 crore are being implemented at Thevara under Amrut project. Relaying works have been completed near Konthuruthy church. Currently, KWA is implementing works between Thevara Ferry and Mattammal Junction,” said Elizabeth, a councillor representing Thevara

At Edakochi, pipe-laying works are being implemented under Amrut and KWA schemes

According to K J Basil, councillor of Edakochi North, KWA has already constructed a ground-level water tank near Jnanodayam Sabha temple. The plan is to lay pipelines on the one-kilometre stretch at Edakochi and construct an overhead tank at Edakochi under Amrut project

“KWA is also directly laying pipelines on a two-kilometre stretch along the Aroor-Thoppumpady Road at Edakochi. The work is nearing completion. Once the pipe-laying works are completed, the roads will be relayed,” said Basil

He also said that the project would help address water crisis at Edakochi north and south divisions. KWA ensures uninterrupted water supply

Kochi: KWA officials said that after the devastating floods in August last year, water level has gone down in many places. Though it is a matter of concern, they said that there are no issues related to pumping. “Currently the water level in Periyar is 20cm (0.2m) above sea level. We are able to provide sufficient water to public,” said an engineer at KWA pumphouse, Aluva

There are three points at KWA’s supply point at Aluva, where three tanker trucks can be filled at a time. “Normally, 200 tanker trucks can be filled a day, provided each truck is allowed to fill for 20 minutes at one point,” he said

When other water sources in the city and suburbs dry up, water tankers queue up at KWA’s supply point. It takes half-an-hour to fill a 30,000-litres tanker

Officials added that KWA constantly monitors pressure in the pipelines to avoid bursts and leakage
