The Public Works Department has begun desilting, dredging and strengthening the bund along the course of the Adyar river. The project, spread over a period of one year, began a week ago.
“The work was to begin by August. However, due to the rain from the southwest monsoon that month, it was postponed. Now with no rain over the past ten days, we have engaged as many as 16 earthmovers for the desilting,” said a PWD official.
A total of 12.5km, beginning at the mouth of the river near the Manapakkam check dam, is set be covered during the course of the work. A senior official said the river bund should be 60 metres wide, but had shrunk to less than 30 metres at several places along the river course due to encroachments. “After removal of encroachments along the river, we will construct a retaining wall in vulnerable locations to prevent floodwater from entering residential areas,” he said.
The PWD will also lay storm water inlets along the river course to avoid water runoff during the rain. This will also help recharge the groundwater table, officials said. Greater Chennai Corporation has lent a few of its amphibian vehicles to clear vegetation in major canals maintained by the PWD.
