The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working towards setting up around 10,000 km of optic fibre cables (OFC) infrastructure across the country by FY25. National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML), a fully-owned special purpose vehicle (SPV) of NHAI, will be implementing the 'digital highways' network
NHLML will be developing integrated utility corridors along the national highways. As part of this, around 1,367 km on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and 512 km on the Hyderabad-Bangalore corridor have been identified as pilot routes for the digital highway development. By offering internet connectivity to remote locations, the OFC network will speed-up the roll-out of telecom technologies like 5G & 6G
The OFC laying work has started and is expected to be completed in a year's time, following which a direct plug-and-play or 'fibre-on-demand' model will be provided for the telecom/internet services
The network will be leased out on a fixed price allotment mechanism on 'open for all' basis, and OFC allotment policy is being finalised in consultation with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)
