The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is initiating a pilot project to recycle and reuse wastewater in four slum clusters in South Mumbai. As part of this project, four decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) are being established to treat 4.85 lakh litres of wastewater currently being discharged into the sea
The BMC aims to promote environmental sustainability and maximize resource utilization by treating the slum wastewater and utilizing the treated water in toilets and parks. The capacity of the STPs varies, with the smallest being a 35 kLD (kilo litres per day) plant at Darya Sagar slum near Mahalaxmi. The largest, with a capacity of 300 kLD, is located at Markandeshwar slum. Two other plants of capacities 100 kLD and 50 kLD, are being established at Darya Nagar and Shivaji Nagar near Tata Garden, respectively
The project, named 'Integrated Wetland Technology,' is being implemented by the SMILE Council, which is the BMC's civic-tech incubator.
