In view of the growing demand for potable water in Kochi and neighbouring local bodies, the government has decided to include the proposed 190 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) at Aluva for drinking water projects in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The Rs 2,500-crore project is funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB)
Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has identified around four acres at Aluva town for setting up the plant. It will require a raw water pipeline of less than 500 mtrs. length to take water from river Periyar to the proposed plant. Moreover, since the land is owned by KWA, formalities for acquisitionand others will not be needed
KWA is expected to invite tender for the project soon
The total cost of the WTP is Rs 495 crore, of which Rs 190 crore is for operation and maintenance of the plant for 10 years
