Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin, laid the foundation stone for a 400 MLD desalination plant in Chennai on 21 August, 2023. The SWRO plant which will come up at Perur is expected to improve water security and ensure clean drinking water to residents of Chennai
The design, build, operate (DBO) project is a collaborative endeavour between the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) and a joint venture led by VA Tech Wabag (WABAG) and Metito Overseas (Metito) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
The work spans design and engineering to construction, installation, testing, and commissioning. Post completion WABAG will be involved in carrying out operation and maintenance (O&M) for 20 years. The cutting-edge desalination plant will integrate water treatment systems including lamella clarifiers, dissolved air flotation system, gravity dual media filters, reverse osmosis, and re-mineralization
The 400 MLD of potable drinking water will be distributed to the residents of South Chennai by CMWSSB
