Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) on 21 November, 2023 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GAIL (India), for compressed biogas (CBG) projects and other renewable energy projects in the state
GAIL (India) will be initially setting up 10 CBG projects with an investment of about Rs 600 crore. It will enable the production of 35,000 tonne of biogas (CBG) and about 8,700 tonne of organic manure annually. PEDA will facilitate GAIL with land locations and statutory clearances
The project will generate direct employment to more than 250 persons and indirect employment of about 600. It will also create rural entrepreneurs for the supply of paddy straw to these plants. The possibility to establish other new and renewable energy projects in the state will also be explored
The state's new and renewable energy sources Minister, Aman Arora stated that the agreement will help the state to manage five lakh tonne of paddy straw per annum and generate clean energy out of it. Punjab, being an agrarian state, has immense potential for crop residue-based CBG plants
With these10 projects, at least three lakh tonne of paddy straw is expected to be prevented from being burnt
