Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced recently that more than Rs. 1,100 crore has been earmarked for the development of 25 inland waterways projects in the Northeast region. Serving as the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, Waterways, and Ayush, Sonowal directed officials to prioritize critical projects within his ministries in the Northeast, with a goal to complete them by January 2024
Chairing a review meeting of ongoing projects in the northeastern region, Sonowal revealed that out of the 25 inland waterways projects, 15 programs, totaling Rs. 850 crore, were sanctioned for Assam. He emphasized the completion of seven floating jetties in various locations and permanent jetties at strategic points
Specifically, the minister highlighted the completion of a permanent jetty at Sonamura in Tripura and the renovation of a jetty at Badarpur in Karimganj. The review also encompassed progress on 15 floating jetties in the Brahmaputra and 15 jetties in the Barak river
Sonowal directed the officials of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to regularly dredge 88 identified shallow passages on the Brahmaputra river to ensure the smooth passage of ships. He aligned these efforts with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Transformation via Transportation,' expressing the commitment to operationalize critical projects in the region by January 2024
Shifting focus to the Ministry of Ayush, which is implementing projects worth Rs. 286 crore across the Northeast, Sonowal urged officials to scale up and expedite these initiatives. He highlighted the foundation stone laying ceremony for a Yoga and Naturopathy hospital in Dibrugarh and a new building for the Regional Research Institute of Homoeopathy and integrated Ayush Wellness Centre in Guwahati, both scheduled for January 2024
Sonowal also emphasized the completion of several buildings at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI) in Guwahati, with an investment of Rs. 10.45 crores, to be inaugurated by December 2023. Underlining Ayush as a major area of interest for the government, he expressed optimism about the progress in the sector and highlighted the operational Ayush Health and Wellness centers and integrated Ayush hospitals in the region. Additionally, he mentioned the support for Ayush education institutions and the approval of new Ayush institutes in Sikkim, Manipur, and Assam
