Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (SPIC) has charted a capex programme involving a sum of Rs 970 crore to boost urea capacity and set up a green ammonia plant. To this end, the expansion plan includes revamping of SPIC’s existing urea plant to augment capacity, and establishing a 150 tpd green ammonia plant.
The urea plant revamp pertains to enabling stability of the plant and improving efficiency, while it overall reflects commitment to bolster production capacity, diversify operations and drive sustainable growth. These will enhance urea production capacity to 9.12 lakh tonne from 6.24 lakh tonne. The company engaged in the manufacture and sale of urea, now has a sustainable supply of natural gas, and transitioned to gas-based manufacturing. It has been included in the gas pool mechanism with effect from 01 May, 2024.
Post-transition from naphtha to natural gas as a raw material source, plant has shown higher efficiency. Going forward, the company expects to sustain growth in topline and bottomline, led by capacity expansion and conversion to 100 percent gas-based operations and favourable market.
SPIC, a leading fertiliser manufacturing company in the country located at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, is a joint venture (JV) founded by Dr MA Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).
