Kolkata Metro, India’s first metro system, is set to implement the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, enabling driverless train operations on two routes. This advanced signalling upgrade, costing ?800 crore, will automate train operations, eliminating the need for motormen. The CBTC system will be implemented on the Joka-Esplanade and Kavi Subhash-Biman Bandar routes. Officials noted that this technology is already in use on the East-West Metro corridor.
