Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has informed that construction of 1,000-MW solar power project in Karbi Anglong will begin shortly. On 14 June, 2024, the CM had laid the foundation stone for a 25-MW capacity solar power generation project at the premises of the Namrup Thermal Power Station in Dibrugarh district.
A joint venture between the Assam Power Generation Corporation (APGCL) and Oil India (OIL), the project will cost Rs 115 crore. The project, approved by the state Cabinet on 19 August, 2022, is projected to produce 50 million units of electricity annually, and its construction is expected to be completed by July 2025.
The upcoming power plants in Barchalla, Sonitpur and Khudigaon in Dhubri district are in various stages of development. The 120-MW Lower Kapili Hydropower project, on the other hand, has started yielding electricity, the Chief Minister said, while also suggesting that the state will be able to produce around 3,000 MW of solar generated electricity by 2030.
Initiatives such as the solar power project at Namrup will augment the state’s power generation capacity and will further help in reducing reliance on power purchased from outside the state. Till date, a total of seven solar power projects in the state are functional, accounting for 175 MW of daily power generation, as stated by the CM.
