The Ministry of Coal has launched India's first-ever pilot project for underground coal gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal block in Jamtara district of Jharkhand.
This initiative, under the aegis of Eastern Coalfields (ECL), will comprise conversion of coal into valuable gases such as methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide through in-situ gasification. The area is specifically suited for deployment of UCG technology specifically as it is adapted to India's geological and mining conditions.
Managed by Eastern Coalfields (ECL) in partnership with the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) in Ranchi and Ergo Exergy Technologies (EETI) from Canada, this project will span two years, and would be executed in two phases. The initial phase, which began on 22 June, 2024, involved creating a technical feasibility report through drilling boreholes and testing samples, while the second phase will focus on pilot-scale coal gasification.
This project, funded by the CIL R&D Board, highlights the collaboration between ECL and Ergo Exergy as key implementing agencies. The successful execution of this pilot project is expected to open transformative opportunities for the energy sector, with sustainable and efficient use of coal resources.
