In a good news for tourists and Varanasi residents, the Varanasi Ropeway Project is showing remarkable progress and the first leg of the new public transport system is expected to be ready soon. The Varanasi Ropeway Project is India's first public ropeway system comes under the National Ropeways Development Programme, 'Parvatmala Pariyojana.'
The first leg of the project is expected to be completed by August 2024, according to a report by The Economic Times. Phase 1 of the whole project is expected to be ready by May 2025, and is going to cost Rs 645 crore. The first leg will connect Varanasi Cantonment Railway Sation to RathYatra.
The ticket price of taking the ropeway rides have not been announced yet, as the project is still under construction. The stations include: Varanasi Cantonment, Kashi Vidyapith (Bharatmala Mandir), RathYatra, Girja Ghar Godowlia Chowk.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the 3.75-kilometre Passenger Ropeway, which will connect Varanasi Cantt Station to Godowlia via five stations, in March 2023. Operating on the up and down cables, the service will comprise approximately 150 gondolas that can accommodate 10 passengers each, with a maximum capacity of 6,000 passengers per hour.
In addition to providing breathtaking views of the city from above, the ropeway cuts the distance between Varanasi junction and Godowlia in half, taking only 16 minutes. At any of the four stations, passengers can expect a gondola to arrive every two to three minutes.
