THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Smart City road construction project in the capital has encountered significant delays due to a shortage of labourers, persistent rains, and an extended project deadline.
Although many roads are currently motorable, essential tasks such as drain work, the removal of electric posts, final tarring, and the installation of street lights remain incomplete. The delay in removing electric posts is primarily due to a workforce shortage at the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
It appears that the authorities have taken the extension of the deadline for the Smart City Mission by the ministry of urban development to March 2025 for granted, and have now revised the completion date to the last week of Aug 2024.
An official from Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) explained that contractors are also assessing potential damage to the motorable roads caused by recent heavy rains, which has further stalled progress.
Work has indeed slowed down. Besides the rain and utility removals, contractors are evaluating the roads laid with the first layer of tarring. There is also a labour shortage, but we can mobilize workers to expedite the project. The delay in removing electric posts is due to KSEB's staffing issues, and they are currently evaluating if an additional workforce can be assigned. Final tarring can only proceed once the posts are removed,” the official said.
