The Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL)is the longest sea bridge of India. It has a length of 21.8 kilometers, with 16.5 kilometers stretching over the sea and the remaining 5.5 kilometers on land.
The Atal Setu is a modern engineering marvel, with features to ensure safety of commuters and efficiency. An emergency escape passage and a ventilation system run along the entire length, prepared to handle any unforeseen circumstances. The bridge is also designed to handle bi-directional traffic flow.
The bridge was named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a former Prime Minister of India, known for his vision and leadership. The official name is 'Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu'. The much-anticipated Atal Setu was officially inaugurated on January 12, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marked a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development and brought relief to those who faced travel disruptions due to weather or traffic congestion.
The Atal Setu has provided quicker connectivity to Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai International Airport with. It also reduces the time needed to get from Mumbai to South India, Pune, and Goa. Additionally, it has strengthened Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mumbai Port's connectivity. The Atal Setu is expected to be a significant economic driver for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By reducing travel times and improving connectivity between key areas, the bridge is poised to facilitate trade, commerce, and overall economic activity.
The construction of the Atal Setu prioritised environmental sustainability. The Bombay Natural History Society, a renowned environmental organisation, even acknowledged the project's efforts with a certificate of appreciation. Measures were taken to minimize sound and vibrations that could harm marine life.
