Kochi: Following strong opposition from local residents, the govt has decided to temporarily suspend the proposed water supply by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) along the Periyar River banks allegedly for industrial purposes. According to sources, instead, the govt has decided to prioritize Kerala Water Authority's (KWA) 190 MLD project to supply drinking water to the city.
The govt recently approved the long pending Kinfra project. However, the authorities could not start the works as residents organised under an action council and staged protests against the initiative. The protesters alleged that Periyar does not have the capacity to cater to the needs of a new project for industrial purposes, and they demanded the implementation of the 190 MLD drinking water project first.
Kinfra sources said the govt has taken a stand that the remaining works could resume only after the commencement of 190 MLD plant works. KWA has already started the procedures to get funding for the project, but it will take at least six months, said a source.
In April 2022, the Kinfra authorities had started the pipe-laying works of the water supply project. However, different social organisations protested, alleging that a new project on the banks of the Periyar would worsen the water shortage issue in the city, and authorities were forced to stop the works.
