The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the government’s housing authority, has decided to transfer all reserved public roads within its layouts to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in a bid to streamline urban development in the country’s financial capital.
MHADA is responsible for 114 layouts in Mumbai, many of which include roads that are reserved under the MCGM’s official Development Plan for public use. These reserved roads are crucial for urban development and are intended to be used for public purposes. However, the lack of a proper handover process for these roads has caused delays in several important redevelopment and infrastructure projects across the city.
In a bid to address this issue and speed up development, Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice president and CEO of MHADA, has directed the Executive Engineers and Estate Managers to immediately begin transferring all the reserved roads to MCGM.
This transfer will take place regardless of whether the roads are free from unauthorized structures or have encroachments. The responsibility for maintaining, repairing, and managing these roads will now fully rest with MCGM.
